Why we do what we do
Run as a not-for-profit arm of the Sundowner group, The Sundowner Bee Rescue initiative was started in August 2020.
Due to the complex nature of bee rescues, even the simplest job will take 1 hour- far longer than a traditional bee extermination (a 5-min job). We were forced to make a choice...
Do we do this for a profit (but be priced out of the market)? Or do we want to do this to save the bees?
The decision was simple...
As of 2022, the initiative has rescued and relocated more than 150 bee colonies a year. That's more than six million pollinators not killed!
We also run paid experiences such as the Rooftop Farm Experience and Mead Making Workshops. These are available for join-in on the weekends or private sessions on weekdays for corporate groups.
Perfect for young families or anyone interested in nature and conservation, the proceeds from these experiences help to defray and fund our bee rescue operations and upkeep of apiaries.

Clarence Chua, founder
An 80s kid, Clarence has been catching bugs since he was in primary school. The thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of keeping a mini pet alive remains a hobby he enjoys to this day, albeit with a far more complex social animal, the honey bee.
It all started when a swarm of bees moved into his garden shed one day in 2020. Not wanting to kill them, he contacted a relocator. But the relocator was not able to do it, and so he taught himself bee relocation via YouTube, and later, bee-keeping. The payment? Dozens of bee stings!
The joy of keeping and preserving this keystone species, in a harsh environment such as Singapore, is high up his raison d'être.
Eugene Goh
Eugene Goh's passions span engineering, photography, and environmental conservation. His introduction to insects was through a chance gift of a formicarium (enclosure for ants), sparking a fascination with superorganisms and their intricate behaviours.
Since 2022, Eugene has helped relocate hundreds of bee colonies, and actively trains new team members.
Through his knowledge gained from rescuing bees and his commitment to environmental education, Eugene co-developed "haBEEtat," an educational card game designed to raise awareness about the importance of honeybees and the alternatives to extermination. It is now widely distributed via NIE.
Samuel Yap
Sam is The Sundowner's star experiences host, but on the side, he has found the one calling that he will never leave behind: Rescuing bees. This conservation pursuit helps to bring purpose and meaning to his life.
However high up a tree or deep inside an attic it may be, Sam will always be looking forward to rescuing more bees!
Outside of hosting and saving bees, he loves to try everything and anything. From working working in the Food and beverage line, to working as a scare actor for Halloween and even dressing up as Spiderman for a kids birthday party.
