Why we do what we do

Run as a not-for-profit arm of the Sundowner group, The Sundowner Bee Rescue initiative was started in August 2020.

Due to the complex nature of bee rescues, even the simplest job will take 1 hour- far longer than a traditional bee extermination (a 5-min job). We were forced to make a choice...

Do we do this for a profit (but be priced out of the market)? Or do we want to do this to save the bees?

The decision was simple...

As of 2022, the initiative has rescued and relocated more than 150 bee colonies. That's more than one million pollinators not killed!

Our Team

This is our core team, and we are always open to hiring people vested in nature conservation.

Clarence Chua, founder

An 80s kid, Clarence has been catching bugs since he was in primary school. The thrill of the hunt and the satisfaction of keeping a mini pet alive remains a hobby he enjoys to this day, albeit with a far more complex social animal, the honey bee.

It all started when a swarm of bees moved into his garden shed one day in 2020. Not wanting to kill them, he contacted a relocator. But the relocator was not able to do it, and so he taught himself bee relocation via YouTube, and later, bee-keeping. The payment? Dozens of bee stings!

The joy of keeping and preserving this keystone species, in a harsh environment such as Singapore, is high up his raison d'être.

Eugene Goh

An engineer by training but a photographer by trade, his introduction to insects was through a chance gift of a formicarium (enclosure for ants).

He quickly founded his first colony of ants and was thoroughly fascinated by their habits, quirks, and behaviour. It truly opened his eyes to the beautiful relationship between nature and it's many participants (both large and small).

When Clarence offered him the chance to work with bees, he jumped at the chance!

He loves tinkering and thinking up engineering solutions to problems, and that extends to all areas of bee rescue / conservation as well.

Edmil Chue

Passionate about all things green and edible, Edmil's interest in bees took off after working closely with them during his summer internship at The Sundowner.

Watching them take off from their homes in search of food, helping beautiful flowers bear tasty fruits, and understanding the complex role honeybees play in the larger ecosystem... his newfound appreciation for these marvelous insects motivated him to continue participating in bee rescues beyond his internship stint.

Currently, he has successfully convinced the managing agent of the condominium he lives in to actively choose bee rescues over exterminations, and hopes many others will join in too.
